I have been researching my ancestors who lived in Stansted, and have found Joseph Hills as the Publican at the Black Horse in the 1891 Census. It is likely that he inherited the Pub from his wife, Miller Skudder, who died in 1888. *
Although the Census does not say if Joesph was the owner, it is written in our family history that this was believed to be the case. I believe he had left the pub by 1911 as he was listed as a builder in the 1911 Census, but still living near by.
I used to frequent the pub in the 1980s, playing pool and the slot machine, little did I know that the pub was owned by my ancestors in the past ! *
