Bethnal Green pub history index
Existed from at least 1815. Initially at Cheshire Street. At 12 Hare Street in 1856 & 11 Hare Street in 1869 then 21 Hare Street; It's also listed as 23 Hare Street in the 1882 Directory. The same building (or at least the same site) is later marked on Ordnance Survey maps as the Cheshire Street Synagogue (though it is now demolished). *

16th January 1862/Michael Dormer - Letters of Administration (with the Will
annexed) of the Personal Estate and effects of Michael Dormer late of the
"Red Cross" Public House Hare street in the Parish of St Matthew Bethnal
Green in the County of Middlesex Victualler deceased who died on or about 15
January 1815 at the "Red Cross" aforesaid left unadministered by John Peck
and Edmund Baynton the Executors and also by Mary Bona (wife of Peter Bona)
the Niece and one of the Residuary Legatees in the said Will were granted at
the Principal Registry under certain Limitations to John Dormer of 7 East
street Green street Victoria Park Cemetery in the Parish of Bethnal Green in
the said County Weaver he having been first sworn. Former Grants Prerogative
Court of Canterbury February 1815 and January 1851. Effects under £1000. ***

It does say on the side panel why it took so long to execute the will. A
very complicated story and a LOT of money involved for that time as well.
The panel which I have copied for you, to the right of the will, explains
what happened - and I have copied it below for you to read. Also in the main
body of the will one name popped out - (it is extremely hard to read the
full text) - but it shows that one of the witnesses to the will had the last
name of Gable (Thomas Gable). The Gable family appears to have run the pub
for a number of years. I don't know who actually owned it by then. Or what
happened to the goods and chattels of Michael Dormer - but it was a long
wait re the dispensing of the will to the recipients named in it. I may have
misinterpreted it, but will continue to try and sort it out. I am presently
trying to read and understand the writing of the actual 1815 will. ***
