My wife's ancestor James Bennett Carter was the Licensee in 1870.He paid rent for the premises to the Duchy of Lancaster of £40 per annum, on which figure he also paid Land Tax of £3.6s.8d.James died there on 25th May 1870 of cirrhosis dropsy (acute liver failure).
The Louisa Carter mentioned in the license transfer was his wife who, presumably, was able to stay on until December having paid the rent for that year. *
