The house stood on the east (river) side of Millbank Street, opposite Wood Street and the Portman Arms. It was demolished during the 1870s to lay out the first part of Victoria Tower Gardens. *

before discovered, that the prompt attendance of the fireman and engines,
and a plentiful supply of water could not save any portion of the premises;
five adjacent buildings, to which the flames had communicated, were however
