Acorn, 149 Queensbridge Road, Shoreditch E2

Shoreditch index

The Acorn is first noted as a pub in 1827 when George Priestman was a subscriber to the Licensed Victuallers Association. The Acorn is noted as being licensed by William Moore in about 1833, Joseph Arnold in 1839, Nicholas Norman in 1842 and William Cockett in 1846 and 1847. Henry Glass is licensee between at least between 1850 and July 1853. At this time, Thomas William Hodges is the incoming licensee for nearly twenty years. It then looks like George & David Bruce share the licensing for the next twenty years, until about 1891.
Alfred Steadman is next listed for a number of years, and Mrs Kathleen E Harris in 1898. Thomas Easterbrook holds the license for another five years, John Cantor for several years, and Harry Albert Winn Weston about 1911. Thomas Henry Bryant is next the licensee for about thirty years until at least 1942. I drill down into his life and links to the pub trade further down this page.

The address of the Acorn is at 65 Great Cambridge Street in 1869 & earlier; then at 149 Great Cambridge street. The modern address is 149 Queensbridge Road, E2 by 1940 through rod renaming, and now permanently closed by 2018. There was a planning application to demolish the current building and replace it with a seven storey building which was refused; and listed as an Asset of Current Value in 2016. It was formerly a Trumans Hanbury pub, later being part of the Mayfair Taverns and also the Ascot chain.
