Cogers Hall, 15 Bride lane, Fleet street, St Brides EC4

St Bride pub history index

COGERS HALL, 15, Bride Lane, and the DISCUSSION HALL, 10, Shoe Lane," though separate houses, are nevertheless to be linked together, because the “ Cogers " hold their festivals at the latter house, now in the possession of our esteemed Common Councilman George Walters. An account of the Society of Cogers is given in “All the Year Round," 15th February, 1868. It was founded by Daniel Mason, about the year 1755. The Cogers of old included Curran, Daniel O'Connell, and Judge Keogh.

This pub was formally called the White Bear and appears as such in records throughout the time it was also known as the Cogers Hall. The Cogers were a debating society, formed at this pub in 1755 and moving to the Barley Mow in 1871. The pub was sold (as the White Bear) and demolished in 1895. But a replacement pub survives – it is the St Bride’s Tavern and the address is today given as 1 Bridewell Place. **

The address in 1938 and 1944 is at Salisbury square.

Eve Pattiner and Australian servicemen at the Cogers

In WWII, my father and many of his RAAF colleagues used to frequent a Pub called Coger's, after Coger's Hall, Bride Lane and it was owned by the Collinson family. I believe it is now the St Bride's Tavern which fronts Bridewell Place these days.
I am writing a screenplay and trying to get it as accurate as I can. I have been in touch with St Brides Tavern and they don't have any history.
Coger's Hall Debating Society was broad in it's location but appears to have been held at this location prior to moving out of London.
Surprisingly, there is little information about Coger's at the turn of WWII as a popular venue for Aussie servicemen. At the time it was owned by the Collinson Family and Eve Pattiner (daughter of the Collinsons) was a popular hostess. Her husband was killed early in the war.

Dad and Bluey earned the DFC (Bluey twice). They were returned to Australia in March 1942. The DFC is the Distinguished Flying Cross, this is one of the highest awards available for airmen. *
