EDLESBOROUGH is an extensive parish, including tho hamlets of Dagnall,
Hudnall, Horton, and Northall, situate in the hundred of Cottesloe, and
union of Wycombe. The parish extends 9 miles in length and 1 in breadth, and
covers an area of 4579 acres, with a total population, in 1861, of 1671. It
is situate near the Ivinghoe hills, 3 miles N.E. of Ivinghoe, and 2 1/2 S.W.
from Wendover. The church, seated on an elevation, is a fine Gothic
structure of the 12th century, dedicated to St. Mary, and consists of
chancel, nave, two aisles, and tower containing six bells and a clock; a
spire originally surmounted the tower, but was destroyed by lightning in
1827. The interior has some old stalls and brasses to the families of Brugis
and Rufford; in the chancel is a trefoil-headed piscina. The living is a
vicarage, to which is attached the curacies of Dagnall and Northall, in the
deanery of Mursley and patronage of the Earl of Brownlow, who is
impropriator of the great tithes. The Rev. William Bruton Wroth, M.A., is
incumbent. There is a Free School, endowed by the Countess of Bridgwater.
The charities realise about £40 Annually. The majority of the inhabitants
obtain a livelihood by straw plaiting.
Dagnall is a hamlet in the parish of Edlesborough, which village it adjoins.
There is no church here, divine service being held in a private house; the
Rev W. H. Podmore is curate. The Wesleyans have a chapel, connected with
which is a Sunday School. There are also schools in which reading, writing,
and straw plaiting are taught; the latter is the chief employment of tho
inhabitants.
Northall is also a hamlet in the parish; it contains a Free School, in which
church service is held.
