(John Payton who died in 1759 was my 6G grandfather)
Will of John Payton of Abingdon in the county of Berks, Victualler, proved May 17th 1759.
Give to Sarah, wife, and after her death to Thomas, my son, my mortgage or tenement wherein I now dwell commonly called or known by the sign of The Duke of Cumberland's Head situated and being in Abingdon aforesaid on the south side of a certain street there called the Ock Street.
Probate records of the Consistory Court of Salisbury - Ref No P1/11Reg/400 **

Son Thomas took over the lease of The Duke of Cumberland's Head from Sarah after her death and changed the name of the pub to The Duke William. (I have been told, though do not have direct evidence, that he held the lease of this pub until his death in 1795.)
Thomas Payton, victualler was buried on the 27th August 1795 at St Helen's, Abingdon.
He left it to his wife Theodora (died 1812) and his eldest son John Payton, who left Abingdon for London between 1812 -1814, presumably after selling the pub. **

(Brief notes from the will of Thomas Payton -
Friend John Waite to hold all my freehold messuages and tenements being in Ock Street including the brewhouse, outhouse buildings yards etc. and all the brewing utensils in the said brewhouse for the use of my dear wife Theodore Payton during her life and after her death to the use of my son John Payton
Written 7 Jul 1795, proved at Oxford, 22 October 1795 by Theodora Payton the widow and sole executrix). **
