The first entry is in 1830 with Jonathan Britten - he is
my 3x great-grandfather. He’s also mentioned in the 1830 Pigot’s Directory as a
bricklayer (as Brittain). *
The pub was also known as the Lord Nelson. From the BMDs section of the
Berkshire Chronicle, 19th March 1831 :
On Friday last, the 11th instant, aged 31, Alice, the wife of Mr Jonathan
Britten, landlord of the Lord Nelson, Abingdon. *

Jonathan remarried in September, 1831 - to Hester/Esther Chapman (nee
Brown), daughter of Henry & Esther Brown (victuallers). It looks like Esther
Brown was at the New Wheatsheaf at 26 West St Helen Street in the 1851 census. *
