Death of Mr Charles Butler
Cold Ash Licensee passed away on Christmas Day
By the death of Mr Charles Butler, which occurred very suddenly on Christmas morning, Cold Ash has lost one of its oldest residents.
Mr Butler who was aged 79 and had spent all of his life in the village was about on Wednesday as usual. And although lately his health had been none too good, his death had been unexpected.
For 60 years he had worked at the Bucklebury Foundry and for the last 50 years he had been the licensee of The Pheasant, Cold Ash, where he was much respected.
As a boy he sang in the church choir and for many years he played a good game of cricket, a sport of which he was very fond.
He leaves a son and two daughters, his wife having pre-deceased him by 18 years.
His funeral took place on Tuesday at St Marks Church, Cold Ash.
In 1939 Henry William Butler is at the Pheasant but listed as a labourer, but may have been running the Inn as well. Also there is Edith Loveridge, sister of Henry William. *

By 1957 Henry William Butler had left the Pheasant and was living at Tenham Cottage Cold Ash. The Pheasant was not showing in the Electoral Register so may have been vacant *
In 1960 Helen E Bell was at the Pheasant - but I do not know if it was still a public house at that time *
The Pheasant still stands today, in 2023, but is now a private house. It was owned in the past by Simmonds Brewery *
