On the 1861 census my great great grandfather Richard Webb appears as an Innkeeper in Ilsley High street, I believe that this is the Crown and Horns as he is listed in the directories just before and after.
Also his father John Webb appears as a licensee in 1830, and again in1844.
Richard Webb is with his third wife Charlotte (Nee Richings), with my great grandmother Fanny Webb aged 4 yrs and also Andrew Webb as a baby.
Fanny Webbs mother was Martha Anne Dixon who died in 1859; whilst Andrew Webb's mother was Charlotte, as he was born in 1861. Richard was listed in the directories until his death in 1868. **

According to the 1871 census my Great Grandfather, Ephraim Woods (1831-1902); occupation "Inn Keeper & Farrier" was head of household at the above address. A few years ago I was delighted to find the pub little altered from his day and to be told about a booklet entitled "Time Gentleman Please" published by the East Ilsley Local History Society. This relates the history of pubs and breweries in the village and confirms that he was indeed the landlord for a brief period (1869-1872 is possible). It seems his smithy adjoined the inn but had recently (at the time of my visit) been demolished to make way for a bedroom wing.  *
