I have an interest in the pub The Duke Sunninghill. My great great Grandfather Thomas Pengilley (Pengelly)b.1832 was residing here (or at least on the site) in 1841. He was the son of Michael Pengilley and Mary Jane Rowe. Both Michael and Mary Jane had died by the 1841 census and his Aunt Elizabeth Pengelly was leaseholder (owner Mathilda Duffield) on the property which was a shop.*
Along with his aunt Thomas lived in the property with his brother George and sister Ellen. In 1851 George was living in Bog Road Sunninghill and was an Apprentice Carpenter – I don't know when Elizabeth gave up the lease of the shop. George and Thomas migrated to Victoria Australia in 1852 and rather than become gold miners Thomas was a very successful shopkeeper and later a publican. Sadly brother George had died in 1854 at only 24 years.*
I would be interested to know when the structure of The Duke was built. That is, is the current building the one my ancestor would have lived in?*
