My husband’s grandfather and great grandfather were proprietors of the New
Inn: Thomas Woodham Sr. and Thomas Woodham Jr. **
I have found on the 1871 Census that Thomas Woodham Senior is listed as the
Publican at the New Inn; with his wife Ann; their children,
Edward, Annie, Eleanor, Louisa and Thomas; the wife’s sister Mary Lunn. **

My mother-in-law, Nellie Louise, born 1897 remembered her childhood in this
home and often spoke of it. She died at the grand old age of 108 in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada in 2005. Nellie Louise was Thomas Woodham Juniors daughter.

I also know that Edward Woodham, eldest son of Thomas Woodham Senior, and
brother of Thomas Woodham Junior, was the proprietor of the
Wellington Arms on
Whitley Street in Reading. This information is listed in the 1885 Smith’s
Directory of Reading. When Edward died in 1892, his wife, Emily married Mr.
Adams and continued to manage the inn until 1899. She died in 1900 at the
age of 46. By 1901, the inn was now managed by James Luker. **
