The 1851 Census shows Stephen as a Victualler and Basket Maker and Head of the household at Halfway. The Jolly Sailor Welford.
He was baptised in Bremhill 16/3/1817. Living with him and wife Alice (nee Denton), b. 1809 Overton Wiltshire, are two of his brothers, Charles, Basket Maker, born Bremhill 1833 and William, Basket Maker born Bremhill 1827.
Stephen and Alice were married in 1841, she died in 1870, he in 1900.
The three brothers were children of George Haddrell and Mary Lewis, and William would marry Eliza Jessett in Stockcross two years later. Also present in the Jolly Sailor in 1851 are Stephen's other children Elizabeth, 4 and William 4 months, both born Welford, William Pound a visitor/dealer and William Collard apprentice basketmaker.
Stephen's other children were probably Harry b. 1853, John b. 1853 (Twins?) and Sarah Jane b. 1855, as well as Henry Denton b. 1842 and Mary Godwin b. 1843 both born "in the Hungerford area, the rest in the Newbury area.
The 1871 Census shows Stephen Haddrell Age 53 b. 1818, living at Halfway, Hoe Benham, Welford Newbury with Eliza Haddrell Daughter Age 22 b. 1849, William D Haddrell Son Age 20 b.1851, Henry Haddrell Age 18 b. 1853, Emily Haddrell Daughter Age 10 b. all born in Berkshire. Next door at Turnpike Gate is Tom Haddrell aged 18 listed as Toll Collector with his cousin George, 10. *
