Windsor pubs history index
Two Hope Inns are listed for Windsor (though I'm wondering if
they're connected) one of which is well thriving. On a History of Windsor Pubs
by Tony Bowra (on the RWWS and other sites) he mentions a Hope Inn on "Frogmore
Road" which crosses crown land these days but once apparently was a road through
to the next town along - Old Windsor. The forum was contacted by a relative (her
g.g.g. grandfather I think!) called Charles Byles. He was apparently there
from 1847 to 1852 when the road was closed and a new public road built to
provide the town link. The pub obviously closed too but apparently it and the
road are still there, if you can access crown land.
Tony Bowra wrote this about the Frogmore Hope Inn: "Between 1837 and 1842, The
Hope Inn in Frogmore Road saw the landlord hosting many civic events
entertaining local gentry as well as Royalty. The owner Mr Byles would not have
known that the Inns very existence was threatened by the closure of the road to
the public with the coming of the railway." - and - "My research then turned up
a strange road that I could not locate initially on any map. Frogmore Road
indicated that The Hope Inn was situated there, run by a Charles Byles. This
road ceased to exist in 1850 when the road system was re-aligned via Albert
Road, leading to Old Windsor. The old road and the house itself can still be
seen today if one has access to Crown Land.".
As you can see, not much is known about it, but it seems to have been that way,
with lots of comings and goings in the C19th - although usually with the poorer
watering holes not usually those with a posher clientele like this one. **
