The 1813 Enclosure map of Winkfield shows the land, meadow, orchard and
cottage owned by Anne Gray. *
In the 1850’s, while two of my relatives owned the cottage, they opened it
as a beer house. *
The 1861 Census lists Anne Gray as the Head of the Household, and running it
as a beer keeper. Henry, Anne’s husband died in the January of 1861, and
Anne herself died in the December of the same year. *
May Bedford is Ann Grays’ niece. Mary Bedford died in May 1900. *
The 1871 Census lists the pub as the “Tally Ho”,
and is owned by Alfred Merrick. *
The 1881 Census list the pub as “The Jolly Farmer”, and is owned by Mary
Bedford. She continues until the 1901 Census. *

The 1901 Census lists Elizabeth Bedford (Mary’s daughter) as the owner.
Elizabeth continues ownership until 1959, when it was sold to “Messrs
Wethered”. They in turn sell it on to “Messrs Whitbread”. *
