BIERTON, with the hamlets of Broughton and Burcott, is an extensive village,
forming a parish, in the hundreds of Aylesbury, and union of the same,
situate 1 1/2 miles N.E. from Aylesbury. The parish is intersected by the
Grand Junction Canal and the Aylesbnry branch of the London and North
Western Railway. The church, dedicated to St. James, is a cruciform
structure, dating from the twelfth century; it comprises chancel, nave,
aisles, and north and south transepts, with a tower, surmounted by a small
spire, containing seven bells and a clock. In the interior is a curious
monument to Mr. Samuel Bosse, who died December 21,1616 on which is an
inscription that it was erected at the " propper coste and charges of Mrs.
Cecily Bosse, the widdowe of the late Mr. Samuel Bosse." The deceased and
his wife are represented kneeling opposite to each other, and their
children, thirteen in number, in the same position, but arranged, the nine
sons behind the father, and the four daughters behind the mother. In the
chancel is an ancient piscina. The living is a vicarage, to which is annexed
the curacy of Quarrendon, value £100, in the deanery of Aylesbury, and
patronage of the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln; the Rev. Joseph Crane Wharton,
M.A., is incumbent. The Baptists and Wealeyans have each chapels in the
village; here is a National School. In 1793 Mr. Hill gave property for the
foundation of a fund for clothing poor men and educating and apprenticing
poor boys, Other charities connected with the parish produce about £50
yearly. The population in 1861 was 691; area in statute acres, 2470. This
place is celebrated for the quantities of white ducks that are annually bred
by the labouring class, and sent to the London market. Some of the owners in
the breeding season will possess two or three hundred young ducks at one
time. Here is the extensive firm of Durley and Son, builders and
contractors, employing many intelligent mechanics, who reside in the
village, and have given an improved moral tone to the working men of the
parish. The manufacture of cattle food has also been successfully introduced
by Mr. Thomas Nash.
