BLEDLOW with BLEDLOW RIDGE.
Bledlow is an interesting village and parish in the hundred of Aylesbury,
union of Wyoombe, 3 miles S.W. from Princes Risborongh, and 5 1/2 E.S.E. of
Thame. The ancient church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is seated on the
edge of a Precipitous cliff, above a beautiful and extraordinary ravine,
overhung by old trees and ivy, into which several springs fall, and uniting
constitute a small crystal lake, called the Lyde. This lake appears to
undermine the cliff, which gave rise to an old prophecy of Mother Shipton :
"They who live and do abide,
Shall see Bledlow church fall into the Lyde;
And they who live and do remain
Shall see the same built up again."
The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Buckingham, valued in the
King's books at £16 9s. 7d., and endowed with £400 private benefaction, and
£200 royal bounty. The present income is about £300 per annum. The benefice
is in the patronage of Lord Carrington, and incumbency of the Rev. William
Stephens, M.A. There is a Chapel of Ease in the hamlet of Bledlow Ridge. The
Wesleyans have a Chapel at Bledlow, and also one at Bledlow Ridge. The
parish comprises an area of 4130 acres, with a population in 1861 of 1189.
