John Loe was born in Fenny Stratford, Buckinghamshire in 1804. In the 1841 Census his occupation is given as "publican" and his age as 35; the other occupants are his wife Mary and their children Sarah (age 5) and John (age 3). They were living in the inn at the time. I haven't been able to find out when he took over the inn, but later census returns suggest it was after 1837 as his son John is born in Simpson.
John Loe died in 1841 and his widow, Mary, took over The Chequers. It must have been a successful business, because John Loe left an estate valued at over £400 (a lot of money in 1841!).
Mary Loe was born in Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire in 1805. She married George Kitchener (a widower) in 1844 and he then took over the pub (in accordance with the law at the time, in that the husband took over the property of the wife on their marriage).
George Kitchener was born in 1805 in Flitwick, Bedfordshire. In the 1851 Census his occupation is given as "Licensed Victualler"; the other occupants are Mary, Mary's children Sarah and John, George and Marys children George (age 5) and Edwin (age 1), and also a servant Ann Berwick (age 17) from Waddon in Buckinghamshire. All the children are born in Simpson. I'm not sure the family actually lived in the inn, the census suggests they actually lived in Simpson. *

I think George Kitchener died in 1877.
