Richard Bullen was the publican for "The Duke of Sussex Clifton, despite the
fact he was also at Barnards Inn,
Holborn in the 1881 census. **
In 1888 he was listed in the Kellys Directory for the "Fleece,
1 Duke Street,
Stamford Street, Lambeth. Then in 1889 to the 1891 census he is at the
Three Compasses, 67 Bankside Southwark.
**
By 1901 census, he is at the White Hart. Fanny, my great grandmother, died in
the White Hart in 1906 and her death was reported by her son Henry Bullen.
Richard Bullen Senior died the following year in Chatham, being retired.
When I spoke to the landlady of the White Hart she informed me that the pub
at that time was a Beer House and not a full public house. That meant he
only had a license to sell beer. They were not allowed sell spirits. **
