DENHAM is a parish and village in the hundred of Stoke county of Buckingham,
2 1/2 miles N.N.W. from Uxbridge, containing, according to the census of
1861, 1054 inhabitants. The living is a rectory in the archdeaconry of
Buckingham and diocese of Oxford, valued in the King's books at £19 9s. 4d.;
present net income £782; patron, Benjamin Henry Walpole Way, Esq.; the Rev.
Charles Antill Hall, incumbent. The church is a very ancient structure and
has been entirely restored and beautified, externally and internally, at a
cost of £2,000; it is dedicated to St. Mary and contains many interesting
monuments. At the time of the restoration a beautiful representation of the
resurrection was discovered under the plaster of the south wall, in an
excellent state of preservation, and is now left as a curiosity, supposed to
be 500 years old. There is a place of worship for the Wesleyans in that part
of the parish called Cheapside. The river Colne and the Grand Junction Canal
pass through the parish. Sir William Bowyer, in 1721, gave £30 per annum,
with a good house and garden for a master and mistress, for instructing 15
boys and 15 girls; this endowment has been augmented by subsequent
benefactions to £67 11s. per annum, and 32 children are now entirely clothed
and educated. There is a Girl's School conducted on the British system.
