LITTLE MARLOW is a widely scattered parish and village, 1 1/2 miles N.E.
from Great Marlow, in the hundred of Desborough, union of Wycombe. Here was
a Benedictine Nunnery in honour of the Blessed Virgin, for four or five
nuns, whose revenues at the time of the Dissolution were valued at £37 6s.
11d. The church, dedicated to St. John, is a neat edifice, with tower and
three bells. The living is a vicarage, in the patronage of Samuel Burch,
Esq.; the Rev. James Baines, M.A., incumbent. A handsome National School has
lately been erected, at a cost of £800. There are charities of about £30
annual value. Westhorpe House, the residence of George Jackson, Esq., and
the Manor House, the seat of J. P. Ellams, Esq., lord of the manor, are
mansions of great beauty. The parish comprises an area of 3346 acres,
chiefly chalk and gravel, with a population in 1861 of 790. The
neighbourhood is celebrated for its beech-woods. An important business in
the manufacture of satin-stich and embroidery, already affording employment
for 300 persons, has been lately established at Well End, in this parish, by
	Messrs. George Cobden and Co.
