P.C. Smith 25 Reports that the Public House sign of the Chip Ax was open at ¼ to 1 am and several Persons therein Landlords name Careless.

P.C.10 Sheldrick reports he heard some persons at the Chip Axe behind the Shire Hall at 1¼ am, knock’d at the door and said who he was, some person from inside threw a pail of water at his legs. After knocking again, Mr Reynolds the Landlord open’d the door and was very abusive. There were several persons drinking there at the time.
Over-written in the Superintendent’s hand, "Reynolds says it was a mistake of the Constables - it was the next house that threw the water.").
