1962, My parents Alan And Helen Winfield-Chislett ran the Fort St George for 22 years from December 1962 to December 1984; retiring to Portugal . *
Cambridge Daily News. 04 September 1981
Cambridge pub that was once on an island has just grown up a bit more. It was at one time completely surrounded by the River Cam, but one channel was blocked off and midsummer drinkers now sit over what is the bed of the Cam.
The pub has for nearly 20 years been building up a reputation for better than average bar snacks. Now with the addition of a dining area, 30 more can be seated, and in addition to a large modern kitchen, the new dining area has a history as long as the pubs.
When landlord Alan Winfield-Chislett, and his wife Helen took over the pub 19 years ago, it was a store room, and its use has not changed until this year. In charge of the kitchen is Mrs Janet Middleton, who has been at the Fort for 17 years.
Renovations found wood-panelled walls which had probably been a rowing clubs headquarters, with carvings of crossed oars on three of the panels.
Cambridge Weekly News. 19 November 1987
