My research is into the family history of the Peathyjohns. *
According to the 1851 census the pub was run by Thomas Peathyjohns along with his wife Susan. When Thomas died in 1868 Susan took over as landlord.
Susan remained as landlord until at least 1901 (as she was living in North Huish at the time of the census) and she died in 1905.

An nquest was held at the Avon Inn, Avonwick on Thursday by the Depity Coroner, Dr Fraser, relative to the death of a labourer named Thomas Peathy Johns who died suddenly whilst loading a cart on the New Kingsbridge Railway.
Dr McCreery stated as the result of the post mortem examination, that death was due from heart disease. Verdict accordingly.

Mr Charles Soper, proprietor of the Wrangton Station Hotel, who was a married man with no family, was 49 years of age, and formerly manager of the Avon Inn, Avonwick .
Since demobolisation from the Army he had not been his former self, and worried when his stock of saleable goods was low. Verdict suicide by hanging.

At All Saints CHurch, Lucknow U.P., India, Miss Kathleen Andrews of 7 Dunraven avenue, Salfords was married to Sergeant W Cowell, of the I.A.S.C. stationed at Lucknow. He is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs F Cowell of the Avon Inn, Avonwick, Devonshire.

Totnes police are hunting two men who ransacked a pub's liquor store at the height of the Saturday night rush.
The victim was Mr Terry Short of the Avon Inn, at Avonwick, between Totnes and South Brent. Bottles of vodka worth £28 were stolen. Two me were later seen driving off in a light coloured hatchback from the pub car park.
