Mr George Frankpitt, one of the best known figures in Braunton, where for 33 years he had been licensee of the George Hotel, died late on Saturday at the age of 78.
Mr Frankpitt a native of Tiverton was an Oddfellow, being a member of Tiverton Lodge, of which he as a trustee for 10 years before going to Braunton.
He took an interest in local affairs at Braunton, and was for a number of years a member of the Parish Council.
He took an interest in Braunton Association Football Club, and before the was was chairman.
He was one of the oldest licensees in North Devon. He was formerly a colour sergeant in the 6th Devons and during the war rendered voluntary help in connection with the local Territorial unit at Braunton.
Mr Frankpitt leaves a sister and one son.
