Jonathan Webster (1857-1933) has been the publican, most recently the Blacksmith Arms in Stondon Massey. OJ was my great grandfather.
I am following up his many children and have info for you about The Fortescue Arms in East Allington, Devon.
OJ's first child, daughter Kate Webster, born Essex 1880, married William Fountain born Essex 1878. My mum told me that Kate 'had pubs' and at last I have tracked one down!
Here is the 1939 Register, with William Fountain, Licensed Victualler, born 19 November 1878, and now at 'the Fortescue Arms' at Kingsbridge, Devon. Also Kate Fountain, domestic duties, born 2 February 1880.
Plus Frederick H Neale, LNER clerk, born 3 June 1899, and Hilda Neale, domestic duties, born 23 April 1901.
My online legwork reveals that this is a misreading of the info, which refers in fact to the Fortescue Arms at East Allington, close to Kingsbridge which was the Registration District. *
So far that is the only pub I have tracked for Kate and William Fountain. They did not start their married life as publicans. I understand William died in 1945.
I have no idea when they moved in to The Fortescue Arms, or out, but were there on 29 September 1939, the date of the Register.
