My Great Great Grandfather William Palmer became the licensee here in 1884. He was born on 24 Oct 1848 in Hoxton, Middlesex England. He was living in Islington when his first wife Sarah Annie (nee Sprake) died in June 1883 and he moved to Weymouth where he ran the pub. His Aunty Sarah Emma (Palmer) Hobbs Dupree and her daughter Martha Drew Hobbs were also helping him there - maybe assisting with his children? *

Aunt Sarah died at the Hotel in Jan 1887 and the following month William married his cousin Martha Drew Hobbs on 2 Feb 1887 back at St Lukes, Middlesex London, where their families were. He continued to run the pub until 30 Oct 1887 when he was killed on the yacht ‘Laureate’ in Weymouth harbour during a severe storm.
10 men lost their lives including William, leaving Martha widowed with his children from the fist marriage. William’s eldest son William Henry ‘Harry’ Palmer (born 1870) was only 17 years old and was then sent to Australia to live with his Uncle Richard Palmer in Waverly Sydney. This is how my lineage on my father’s side came to Australia. *

We are unsure of what happened after William died in Weymouth, what happened to the Cutter Hotel and whether Martha stayed on there. Or the other children, but I’m still investigating! *
Martha appears to be running a toy & fancy goods shop in Park street, Weymouth in 1891. She also appears to have died in 1896 in the workhouse.
