My great x2 grandmother, Alice Watson, nee Brown, is in Kelly's 1879 Directory at The Royal Oak. She was widowed since January 1876,when her husband,Thomas died. She was the daughter of pitman Cuthbert Brown, born 1821 at Oxclose and married at Shincliffe in 1842.She died, aged 85, at Wingate, Easington & was buried 1905,at Byers Green. Thomas was a colliery overman. Their daughter, Margaret Jane Watson married Matthew Bird, my great grandparents. Matthew was a colliery banksman, onsetter and finally shifter. In 1911 his family were at 7, Wilkinson Street.Their daughter, Isabel Bird , born 1878, in Byers Green, married my grandfather, Alexander James Haggie, in 1901. *
I am my family's genealogist and lodged more info with St Peter's Church some years ago. I have visited the village years ago and the Haggies were recalled. They came from Strathearn,Perthshire. The Watsons & Browns were Co Durham mining dynasties. *
