While researching the post-WW2war biography of RSM WO1 Graham Rose I cam across this article:

New Mine Host of Writtle Crown - Clock for Mr G J Rumsey
Yesterday, at Chelmsford Session, the licence of the Rose and Crown Inn, Writtle was transferred from Mr G J Rumsey to Mr G Rose, of the Oyster Smack, Burnham on Crouch. Later in the day Mr and Mrs Rumsey left for Worthing, where they will live in retirement.
The licence of the Crown has been held by the Rumsey family for over 45 years, and by Mr Rimsey for nearly 42 years. The couple will be greatly missed in the village.
Mr and Mrs Rose are no strangers to the district, for during the war Mr Rose was Regimental Sergeant Major of the SAS Regiment at Hylands Park, and he has a notable record of war service. Towards the end of the war he married Miss Rene Perry, daughter of Mrs W Perry, of the Cricketers in Chelmsford, and their wedding at Widford Church was largely attended.
On Tuesday evening past and present players and members of the Writtle Football Club attended for a farewell presentation of an eight day chiming clock, suitably inscribed, to Mr Rumsey who has been associated with the club as chairman and Treasurer for nearly 50 years.
