Charles Pearson is previously at the Cock, Tillingham - a family run business for the previous thirty years. In 1867 Charles Pearson, son of Lydia, takes over the pub, until his death in 1872. His widow, Sarah (nee Cooke), now runs the pub. In 1882 Edmund Pearson, another son, provides life insurance for Sarah. Sarah dies in 1892. *

I believe my great grandparents, James & Catherine Smith, were resident at this pub, certainly in 1905. It is likely James was the landlord as I recall my grandmother telling me she grew up in a pub near Malden and that James spent most of his time fishing whilst his wife brought up a large family - nine siblings - and ran the pub! Unsurprisingly, she made him relinquish the ‘job’ and they went in to farming over towards Epping.
Evidence is that of a baptism record for an aunt of my mother’s on which the pub is listed as the family home as at 29/06/1905 *+
