Three Horse Shoes, 137 High Street, Billericay

Billericay pub history index

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in Essex.

The Three Horse Shoes is now closed and in retail use (2014). It closed just before the First World War, occupying the Georgegian house of considerable charm, now known as Three Horse Shoes House, and next to Burghstead Lodge in the High street. The old inn sign still projects from the building. Originally it consisted of three separate cottages but they were merged together into one building at an earlier date.
The Three Horse Shoes is first mentioned in the Survey of Billericay in 1765. From the years 1765 to 1768 there was another Three Horseshoes in Billericay. In 1769-1770 there was also a Magpie and Horse Shoes, there may have been some confusion. The other Three Horseshoes is listed under the Kings Arms, Great Burstead.
This Three Horse Shoes was a minor coaching Inn, with Thorogoods coach stopping here. Shown on the 1831 Greenwoods Billericay map .
