White Hart, 138 High Street, Billericay CM12 9DF

The White Hart first opened in the early years of the 17th century, on the site of Barclays Bank. In 1667 it was acquired by Joseph Fishpoole, a Billericay wool merchant. Among lands he owned in a 1681 map was a hop garden off of Western road, which he may have used to supply the White Hart.
Between 1765 and 1772, the White Hart transferred to a its present site, near to the Post Office. At that date it was the only pub near to the Crossroads.
In 1776, a cricket match took place at the White Hart, probably at the White Hart Field at the rear. The Chelmsford Chronicle records that a match of cricket between 11 picked gentlemen of Barstable and Chafford Hundreds against 11 of Billericay, for 11 gold laced hats.
Several clocks with the inscription "made by Daniel Cornell at the White Hart, Billericay " exist. William Cornell was licensee of the White Hart from 1791 to 1828. A sale catalogue of 1826 says of the White Hart; "Roomy brick-built house, two parlours, bar, seven bedrooms, garrets, good cellerage, brewhouse, stables. In occupation of Mr Cornell, at the rent of £20 per annum."
The present building and deeds dat back to the early 18th century.
