Green Dragon, Black Notley

"My wife, Christine Brunning (nee Marjoram), was born in the Green Dragon in 1946. At this time the landlord was her grandfather, Aaron Marjoram, nicknamed the "Major", who took over the pub in 1926. Prior to this, the "Major" was the landlord of the Fighting Cocks in Little Sampford. When he died, in 1957, his wife, Lily, took over and when she died in 1966, her son, Tom Marjoram, became the landlord until he retired in 1985.  Tom is still alive in Cressing, Essex. In the picture, which I scanned from a small water colour, which was painted by my wife's aunt, May Marjorham, in 1984. The Pub is the right-hand building, the building on the left was the stables which is now the restaurant area."

Mike Brunning, 13th April 2000
