Rose Bud, Hurst Green, Brightlingsea

"John Harris Lee passed the pub to his son William Lee in 1863. They were from a family of 'Oystermen'. William is described as Oyster smack owner. No reference is made to the name of pub before 1863 except as 'beerhouse'. In January 1863 a ship called Rosebud was wrecked on The Barrow sands off the Essex coast. The crew were rescued by the smack 'Alarm'out of Colchester . In June 1863 William took ownership of the 'beerhouse' and from then on it was known as The Rosebud. Maybe there was a connection, maybe William's smack was the Alarm."
