My grandad, James Thomas Richardson, owned (I believe) or, at least, was the landlord of The British Volunteer
Beerhouse on the Victoria Dock Road, West Ham. He is listed on his marriage certificate to Ethel Louisa Barrett, dated 1904, as a "Licensed Victualler Manager"
at that address. *
[ Just to let you know that my grandad went on to win a Military Medal in WWI and set up home in Chargeable Lane, Plaistow. He and the family were bombed out in WWII and moved to Elliman Avenue, Slough until his death in 1962. ]*
[After his retirement he worked as a "potman" in, I think, The Crown on Slough High Street. I remember him giving us a used dart board for home use made of cork, weighed a ton and had to be soaked every so often to get a dart to go in! ]*
I've also attached for your interest a couple of photos from a WWII weekly paper/magazine called "Everbody's". This is of my dad and his brother playing football in Chargeable Lane and it ran with a caption saying something along the lines of "you can bomb us all you like Mr Hitler but you won't stop our lads playing football". It was posted on the BBC History website which seems to have been closed down now. The second one is the same with the kids names annotated.*
