I can add that an ancestor of mine, William Henry Hicks, was landlord around 1886-87. His wife was Amelia Hicks.
An inquest into the death of his young son was held at the pub on 25th October 1886. (Essex Gazette 27/10/1886) ***
Essex Standard. 30 October 1886
An inquest was held at the Packet Inn, Hythe, on Monday, October 25th, by Mr A E Church, Borough Coroner, on the body of Alfred Hicks, aged 13 months, son of the landlord of the Packet, who died suddenly on Saturday.
Amelia Hicks, wife of William Hicks, landlord of the Packet Inn said deceased was her son, and was about 13 months old.
He had been treated by Mr Partridge, surgeon, East Hill, who attended the child about two months ago for bronchitis. Jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from bronchitis.
It would appear that William Hicks was a Master Bootmaker living in Hythe Quay in 1881 next door to the Horseshoes.
