TIPTREE

KELLY'S DIRECTORY OF ESSEX 1933

TIPTREE (formerly called Tiptree Heath) was formerly part of the Great Forest of Essex: it embraces portions of five parishes, viz.: Inworth, Layer Marney, Messing, Tolleshunt D'Arcy and Tolleshunt Knights, is mostly inclosed and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish June 24, 1859; it is 3½ miles south-east from Kelvedon station on the main line of the London and North Eastern railway and on the Kelvedon and Tollesbury light railway, 6 east from Witham and 7 north-east from Maldon, in the Maldon division of the county, hundred of Lexden and Thurstable, Witham petty sessional division, rural district of Lexden and Winstree, county court district of Maldon, rural deanery of Witham, archdeaconry of Colchester and Chelmsford diocese. Electric light is supplied by the Colchester Corporation. The church of St. Luke, erected in 1855 at a cost of about £1,800, is a plain edifice of brick in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1857. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £375, with residence and 14 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Chelmsford, and held since 1933 by the Rev. Kendrick Warry Sibley A.K.C. The Congregational chapel here was founded 1665. Wix's charity consists of £100 Consols, the interest of which is distributed yearly. In the centre of the village stands a cross of Cornish granite, erected to the memory of the men of the district who fell in the Great War, 1914-18. A fair is held here on July 25th. Here formerly stood a priory of Black Canons of the Augustinian order, founded in the reign of Edward I. by R. de Mount Chesney, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas, the family of Mount Chesney being its principal benefactors: this was one of the forty small monasteries granted to Cardinal Wolsey in 1523, for the endowment of his proposed colleges at Ipswich and Oxford, and was then valued at £22 16s. 4d. but it was forfeited on his attainder. The principal industry is fruit growing and jam making, carried on by Messrs. Wilkin and Sons Limited, who employ about 200 persons in winter and 1,000 in summer, their farms including Tiptree Hall, once the seat and famous experimental farm of the late J. J. Mechi esq. The British school, adjoining the Congregational chapel, is used as a Sunday school and for public meetings, and will hold 150 persons. The principal landowners are Messrs. Wilkin and Sons Limited. The soil is light moor and heavy clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are fruit and seeds. The population in 1921 was 1,483.
