William Willsmore married Catherine (Kate) Saunders in 1908, probably in Earls Colne Baptist Church – as there is not
a record of their marriage at St Andrews Church. She was the youngest daughter of Alfred Saunders, who in 1901 was the landlord of the Anchor Inn, Holt Street, Earls Colne. She is recorded as living there in the 1901 census with her parents and younger brother Oliver. This is the Oliver Saunders who is the landlord of the Three Horseshoes in 1914. He was born in Great Tey in 1889, so he would have been 24 when he took over the pub in 1914.*
