Kings Arms, Church Street, Great Burstead

Great Burstead pub history index

The Kings Arms in Great Burstead was first mentioned in 1765, when it was known as the Three Horseshoes. As there was a similarly named Inn in Billericay, it changed its name in 1775 to the Five Bells, with the last licensee of the Three Horseshoes being John Bull, and also the first licensee of the Five Bells. In 1785, Elizabeth Clarke became licensee of the Five Bells and continued as licensee until 1800. Then she closed down for a year and re-opened in 1802; but renaimg the Inn the Kings Arms. The Kings Arms then remained open until the first decade of the 20th century, with the last licensee being Alfred Wright, in 1902. The building still stands in Church street, abutting on to the west end of the church yard. It was utilised as Gatleys Provision shop in 1962. Early mapping by NLS Ordnance survey maps
