Passing Bridge Street, and proceeding towards the Gravel, we find from the Great Coggeshall Manorial Survey that the SHAMBLES, or the stalls where the butchers exposed their meat for sale, stood in the triangular piece of ground here. These business premises, called the OLD HALL, in 1775 (ante p. 120,), were on or near the site of the Cricketer's Inn, and belonged to the Manor of Great Coggeshall. The roof of the back part of the Shambles, Bufton tells us, fell in on the 25th February, 1686. Here also was probably the CASTELL OF GYNES, which in the reign of Edward IV.
