Anchor, Harwich - newspaper article in 2004
A former pub and hotel which
survived the great flood of 1953 is being torn down to be replaced by flats.
The Anchor, an old Bathside pub built more than 130 years ago, was once the
centre of the community. The pub closed about four years ago [i.e. in 2004].
In 1912, the hotel was extended to incluse a full-size billiards room.
Tragedy struck at the pub in 1953, when a seven foot tidal surge from the
Noth sea was whipped up by a gale force wind, sending an avalanche of water
across the low-lying part of the town. Bathside was particularly badly hit,
with water up to the rooftop of the Prumary school.
Pearl Lofts, 67, the Anchor's landlord, was one of the eight people in the
town who lost their lives in the floods and drowned in the cellar.
