Essex Newsman. 14 March 1914
The Star beerhouse, Ingatestone had been similarly referred (for extinction). Mr L Gray, on behalf of owners Messrs Grat and Sons, and the tenant, Mr Harry King applied for renewal.
PS Ball said there were six full, two "on" and two "off" licensed houses in Ingatestone, and within 300 or 400 yards there were four other houses with better accommodation. He lived just opposite, and he was of the opinion that the house was not required to meet the needs of the neighbourhood. The facilities both for police and tenant were very good, and the house, an old one, was in very good repair. The house was largely used by a very respectable labouring class. The rent was £18, and the average trade for the past three years was 164 barrels and 187 dozen pints of beer. The tenant had held the licene for 15 years, It was an ante-1869 beerhouse.
Mr Gray: I will say the house is not required even if 433 persons have signed a petition in favour of renewal of the licence. The business has been carried on in a most exemplaru manner, and I could not wish for a better tenant than Mr King. The next nearest beerhouse is two miles away, and the accommodation is not so good as this. Mr King also carries on a trade of a wjheelwright. Mr Gray had no other licensed house in Ingatestone, and it would be a hardship if Ingatestone people were not to have Grays beer without having to go a long distance for it. If the justices suggested any improvements the owners would see if they could carry them out. There had only been one change in tenancy since 1868, a remarkable record, and there had not been a single black mark against the premises in any shape or form. The tenant said none of the signatories to the petition was under 20. The licence would be renewed.
