Little Burstead pub history index

The Dukes Head despite being on Laindon Common road is in the parish of Burstead. There is a sale catalogue of 1826 which states:
Dukes Head Public House, Buildings, a Skittle Grounds, let to Mr. Crabb on lease which expires in 1828, at a low rent of £100 per annum. Held by Mr. Mann (who has built some sheds and a temporary bar ) as tenant to Mr. Crabb. The mention of a temporary bar would suggest that the property had not long been open as a Public House, a supposition which is borne out by other contemporary sources.
Skittle Grounds were usually connected with Inns. The game corresponds with ninepins, and is the direct ancestor of ten pin bowling. The licensee records are only listed until 1937, but it is still a Mitchells & Butlers Premium Country public house in 2025. It was known as the Burstead Village Inn for a while but is now the Dukes Head again. Shown on the 1831 Greenwoods Billericay map .
