I have found the 1871 census record for the Black Horse at Pilgrims Hatch, Essex and it shows Thomas Clark b.1825, widower, victualler, his two daughters, Elizabeth and Roberta with a servant and lodger living there, not William Gerrard, who actually lives in a cottage between the post office and Pilgrims Hall further along the road. I hope this helps. ***
