My maternal grandmother, Ellen Brockway nee Saltmash, was born in Pleshey in 1879. Her mother was Susanna Rayment, born 1845.
The father of Susanna and her 5 siblings was a local Farmer and Butcher who died in 1852 and I assume she took on the Pub as a means of supporting the family as a widow. Susanna went on to marry a cousin Rayment Saltmash and my grandmother was one of 8 children. Rayment was a shoemaker. **
