A sign outside The Cock Inn states:

"The sign of the Cock dates back to the 14th century and has often been used by public houses as an indication that cock fighting took place in the rear yard.

In the 17th century the sign was also used to advertise "cock ale" a nasty brew of ale mixed with the jelly of boiled and minced cock.

The Cock at Rochford was back in 1772, a farmhouse part of which housed "Mother Shiptons Inn". Back in 1816 the pub was known as "The Lawn" at which a famous local fox hunting family "the Tawkes", resided.

I am interested in The Cock, as I am descended from Charles Price, publican there 1862-1886; he was my gt gt grandfather. I think he could have been there from 1856, and almost certainly in 1861. The two youngest children were born in Rochford by 1861, which suggests to me that he was there from 1856.In 1875 Charles' son Jeffery was a publlican in Great Burstead (according to his marriage certificate), **
