Spread Eagle, South Weald

At the Essex Record Office when searching their SEAX database, a Black Spread Eagle is mentioned a number of times.
The Assignment of a Mortgage in 18 February 1683/4 notes : "Messuage called the `Black Spread Eagle' in successive occupation of Widow Reeve, Edward More and John Cotton, and messuage in successive occupation of John Langborne, John Page and Mary Lemon both near South Weald church in South Weald."
1725-1868, Deeds of Various properties, including Black Spread Eagle Inn, Bayly's and Carter's Hitchins,luptons, Weald Lays Farm, Serpent's Hall South Weald
In 1733, Deeds of Messuage called the Black Spread Eagle Inn South Weald including small plan of property and abstract of title reciting from 1733.

The Spread Eagle was situated next to the church. The pub was renamed the Tower Arms in 1878, and moved across the road to its current position.
