My Grandmother, Bertha Freeman (nee Prescott) from Yorkshire, was married to Dudley Freeman, who was a tenant farmer at Lawns, Murrells and Traceys farms until he died in his sixties. Bertha came to The Talbot as a widow in the late 30's/early 40's, and my parents, Gwendoline and Bernard Botwood, who had lived at Quendon for a short while, moved in with her. I joined them in 1945. There were always 'lodgers' there, as I think that my Grandmother sub-let during the war to make ends meet, and this continued until we all left in 1957. The house as well as the farms all belonged to Sir Drummond, and then to his son Sir Thomas Spencer-Smith, of Suttons. He offered to sell Talbot House to my parents - and here I am relying entirely on memory so don't hold me to it- with a private mortgage for £6,000. My family could not afford this so we moved on to the next rented property, and so on. Sir Thomas was a good landlord, but died in 1959, leaving a wife and one son. ***
