"The Red Lion sat in front of the Welsh Harp and fronted the Market Square
when the Market square was much smaller and enclosed on all 4 sides. You
have my 3x Great Grandfather listed as landlord - William Argent (b. 1786 -
d. 1850). Your listings show the next landlord as H. Newman.
Henry Newman was not only William's step son (William's 2nd wife was the
Widow Elizabeth Newman formerly Cass) but also his son-in-law as Henry was
married to Alice Argent, his daughter."

My grandfather Eugene Francis Margetson has all records from 1891-1953
listing him as a Stone mason or similar except for 1904 when he was a
'Licensed Victualler of the Red Lion, Waltham Abbey'. My father was born
1908 in Tottenham, and he had an elder brother Cyril Francis MARGETSON born
9th August, 1904 in Waltham Abbey. The certificate shows his address at
birth was the Red Lion.
The next son was born in 1906,also in Tottenham; so Eugene's stay at the pub
was maybe just a year or 2 or 3. He had been working in South Africa in the
1890s, came back to England. Shipping records show him on 8th July, 1903
aboard the 'Walmer Castle' from Cape Town to Southampton.
Also, born in Waltham Abbey on 17th February, 1873 was Ida Maud May HASLER
who had been waiting for Eugene to return and they married in October 1903.
My grandmother Ida Maud May HASLER was the daughter of Thomas HASLER. On the
1861 census he was 'Licensed victualler' and publican of The
Volunteer on Honey Lane, Waltham Abbey.
